Description

Fine large vertical format original woodblock print, taken from the series “Thirty-six Elegant Selections” (三十六佳撰) by the artist Mizuno Toshikata (水野年方) and entitled “Watching the Moon: Woman of Ancient Times” (眺月 上代頃婦人).

The work, produced in 1893 by the publisher Akiyama Buemon (秋山武右衛門), owner of Kokkeido (滑稽堂), depicts a young woman, near a stream in the moonlight, who is wearing a ceremonial necklace of magatama (勾玉) curved beads, whose design is also recalled in the seal affixed under the artist’s signature.

The print on Japanese washi paper (和紙), despite the right signs of aging including some tiny holes in the lower part of the work and a small tear in the upper right corner, is in good condition.
