Description

Rare polychrome woodblock print by the artist Nakagawa Rogetsu (中川蘆月) depicting a hawk on the branch of a pine tree losing its needles, a detail which in the Japanese poetic tradition is associated with early summer.

Born in Osaka in 1859, Nakagawa Rogetsu is a leading artist of the Shijo School (四条派) of Kyoto. Pupil of Kinoshita Roshu (木下蘆洲), Rogetsu passed away in 1924 and is mainly known for his nihonga (日本画) style paintings and woodblock prints.

The print on Japanese washi paper (和紙), despite the right signs of aging, is in very good general condition.
