Description

Rare original woodblock print depicting Hatakeyama Shoji Shigetada (畠山庄司重忠), a samurai warlord who fought between the late Heian period (平安時代) and the early Kamakura period (鎌倉時代), at the height of the hunt for a black bear.

The work, produced around 1830 by the publisher Omiya Heihachi (近江屋平八), is signed in the lower left corner “Shunko ga” (春幸画) that is, in all probability, by the artist Katsukawa Shunsho II (二代目勝川春章).

The print on Japanese washi paper (和紙), despite the right signs of aging including slight folds as well as the presence of a small paper thinning, is in overall good condition.
