Description

Original woodblock print of the kuchi-e (口絵) type made by the artist Mishima Shoso (三島蕉窓) and depicting, in soft pastel tones, a traveling woman from the Heian period (平安時代) pausing on her knees for a moment.

The work, produced in November 1909 by the Hakubunkan (博文館) publishing house, is taken from vol. 15 n. 16 of the famous literary magazine Bungei Kurabu (文芸倶楽部) and was made as the frontispiece of a novel entitled “Autumn Colored Sumac” (櫨紅葉).

The print on Japanese washi paper (和紙), despite the presence of binding holes and right signs of aging, including slight stains and wrinkles as well as a further small hole in the lower central part, is in fair condition.
