Compelling depiction of the Sakuradamon Incident (桜田門外の変), that is the famous assassination of Ii Naosuke (井伊直弼), Chief Minister of the Tokugawa shogunate (徳川幕府), on March 24, 1860 by a group of ronin samurai of the Mito Domain (水戸藩) and Satsuma Domain (薩摩藩), outside the Sakurada Gate (桜田門) of Edo Castle (江戸城). The work was made, in October 1862, by the renowned artist Utagawa Yoshitora (歌川芳虎) and is entitled "Snowy Morning Outside Sakurada: The Battle of the Loyal and Brave Retainers" (外佐久良田勇気之朝忠臣勇士一戦之図). The fine triptych of woodblock prints on Japanese washi paper (和紙), produced by the publisher Iseya Kanekichi (伊勢屋兼吉), despite the right signs of aging as well as the presence of some tiny holes, is in good condition.
