The poet Yasuhara Teishitsu (安原貞室), portrayed at the center of this woodcut by the artist Ogata Gekko (尾形月耕) in one of the most famous spots of today's Nara Prefecture (奈良県), when was overwhelmed by a powerful beauty that he could not describe, wrote: «My, oh my! No more / could I say viewing flowers / on Mount Yoshino» (是はゝ / とはかり花の / よしの山). The verses of this famous haiku (俳句) poem are also the title, visible in the upper right inset, of this work which is taken from the series "Flowers of Japan, Illustrated" (日本花図絵) and which was produced in 1892 by the publisher Sasaki Toyokichi (佐々木豊吉) and by the carver Negishi Chokuzan (根岸直山). The print on Japanese washi paper (和紙), despite the presence of a slight central horizontal fold mark, is in overall good condition.
