Refined polychrome woodblock print made by the artist Mizuno Toshikata (水野年方) and depicting a young woman who, on the occasion of the Tanabata (七夕) "Star Festival", is intent on writing her wishes on tanzaku (短冊) strips of paper which she will then hang on bamboo branches. The work, produced in July 1902 by the Hakubunkan (博文館) publishing house, was made as the kuchi-e (口絵) frontispiece of the novel "Lanterns" (燈籠), published in vol. 8 no. 9 of the famous literary magazine Bungei Kurabu (文芸倶楽部). The print on Japanese washi paper (和紙), despite the right signs of aging, a small thinning in the upper left corner and a slight halo of red pigment on the left side of the sheet, is in good general condition.
