Elegant polychrome woodblock print made as a supplement (附録) for "A Mirror of the Ages" (時代かゞみ), one of the best series of prints by Toyohara Chikanobu (豊原周延) in which the artist presents, with a unmistakably modern taste, a collection of portraits of women that trace the fashion and hairstyles of various periods of Japanese history. The work, of vertical large oban (大判) format, was produced around 1897 by the publisher Matsuki Heikichi (松木平吉), owner of Daikokuya (大黒屋). The print on Japanese washi paper (和紙), despite the right signs of aging, is in overall good condition, thanks also to an effective relining carried out on the back.
