SOLD
Precious painting on shikishi (色紙) signed Zendaitoku Gendo (前大徳玄道), that is by the master Suga Gendo (須賀玄道). On the right side of the work we read the Zen phrase "Seishu chikuro ni fukashi" (清秋竹露深), which can be translated as follows: «A drop of dew, shining on a bamboo leaf, holds within it the clear autumn light». Suga Gendo was born in 1919 in the city of Kitsuki (杵築市), Oita Prefecture (大分県). An expert in calligraphy (書道) and in the way of tea (茶道), in 1947 he was appointed chief priest of the Zuisen-ji Temple (瑞泉寺), which belongs to an autonomous branch of the Rinzai school (臨済宗) of Zen (禅) Buddhism. The work, made in the second half of the 20th century on a thick cardboard with golden edges, is in very good general condition.
