SOLD
In the elegant setting of the first block of Edo-machi (江戸町一丁目) in the Shin Yoshiwara (新吉原) pleasure district, two magnificent oiran (花魁) courtesans walk among the blossoming cherry trees, preceded by the lantern bearers, accompanied by their little kamuro (禿) assistants and followed by the young shinzo (新造) apprentices. The work, of horizontal yatsugiriban (八切判) format, was made in the 1880s by an Utagawa school (歌川派) artist and is taken from a shunga (春画) series entitled "A Collection of Beauties of the Green Houses" (青樓美人合). The refined print on Japanese washi paper (和紙), despite the right signs of aging, is in overall very good condition.
