SOLD
Compelling original woodblock print by the artist Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (月岡芳年) depicting the warrior Yume no Chokichi (夢の蝶吉), armed with a kusarigama (鎖鎌), who is chased by the legendary ninja Jiraiya (児雷也) on the roof of the Sanmon Gate (山門) of the Kokubunji Temple (国分寺), at the foot of Mount Kurohime (黒姫山). The work, taken from the famous series "Sagas of Beauty and Bravery" (美勇水滸伝), was produced in December 1866 by the publisher Omiya Kyujiro (近江屋久次郎), owner of Kiyudo (亀遊堂). The print on Japanese washi paper (和紙), despite the right signs of aging including small restorations and imperfections on the margins as well as the presence of binding holes, is in overall good condition.
