Polychrome woodblock print of horizontal chuban (中判) format made in May 1882 by the artist Toyohara Chikanobu (豊原周延). The work is taken from the series "Models of Our Country's Valor" (本朝武勇鑑) and portrays Tokugawa Ieyasu (徳川家康), sitting on a camp stool, during the Battle of Sekigahara (関ヶ原の戦い).

The Battle of Sekigahara, fought on 21 October 1600, was a decisive battle in the history of Japan, the culmination of the bitter confrontation that kept two coalitions of daimyo (大名) engaged. The eastern army, led by Tokugawa Ieyasu, defeated Ishida Mitsunari (石田三成), who had opposed the Tokugawa clan (徳川氏) by gathering around him the samurai loyal to the Toyotomi clan (豊臣氏).

The print on Japanese washi paper (和紙), produced by the publisher Tsunajima Kamekichi (綱島亀吉), despite the right signs of aging and the gluing residues visible on the back, is in very good general condition.
