Utagawa Kuniteru II

HACHIMAN SHRINE AT FUKAGAWA

Year: 1853
Condition: fair
Size: 36 x 24 cm

SOLD

Precious original woodblock print of horizontal large oban (大判) format, entitled "Precincts of the Hachiman Shrine at Fukagawa" (深かは八幡宮境内) and taken from the "Famous Places in Edo" (江戸名所之内), a series produced in September 1853 by the publisher Maruya Jinpachi (丸屋甚八), owner of Enjudo (円寿堂).

In the lower right corner of the work we read "Kunitsuna ga" (国綱画), which is most likely the signature of a young Utagawa Kuniteru II (二代目歌川国輝), talented pupil of the famous artist Utagawa Kunisada (歌川国貞).

The print on Japanese washi paper (和紙), despite the right signs of aging, is in fair general condition.
