The famous swordsman and writer Miyamoto Musashi Masana (宮本武藏政名), in the night of the mountains of the Tanba province (丹波国), defends himself from the attack of the millenary demon Nobusuma (野衾) who, with the features of a giant bat, hovers above a saisenbako (賽銭箱) offering box.

The work, taken from the famous series "Sagas of Beauty and Bravery" (美勇水滸伝) by the artist Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (月岡芳年), was produced in April 1867 by the publisher Omiya Kyujiro (近江屋久次郎), owner of Kiyudo (亀遊堂), and by the carver Katada Chojiro (片田長次郎).

The print on Japanese washi paper (和紙) shows obvious signs of aging, including some small holes and a restoration in the lower central part.
