Beautiful panoramic view of Enoshima (江の島), the small island in the Sagami Bay (相模湾) in which is worshiped the goddess Benzaiten (弁財天) who, according to legend, is said to have caused it to rise from the bottom of the sea. In the lower part of the work, pilgrims can be seen approaching the island, at low tide, along a sandbar, with the waves foaming on the sides. A pagoda rises above the treetops and Mount Fuji (富士山) can be seen in the distance at right.

The work, printed for the first time around 1830-31 by the publisher Nishimuraya Yohachi (西村屋与八), owner of Eijudo (永寿堂), is taken from the famous series "Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji" (富嶽三十六景) by the artist Katsushika Hokusai (葛飾北斎) and is titled "Enoshima in Sagami Province" (相州江ノ島).

The woodblock print is presented here in a fine edition of the 21st century made, as we read in the seal on the back, by the prestigious Adachi Hanga (アダチ版画) in Tokyo and, despite some slight and right wrinkles of the washi (和紙) handmade paper, is in very good condition.
